Breaking Down Barriers

HAYWARD, Calif. — After finding themselves down 1-0 early to Holy Names, the California Baptist University Lancers put in a dog fight in the second half to grab a come-from-behind 2-1 victory Thursday evening.
The win puts the Lancers 1-4-1 overall and a 1-0 conference record to open PacWest play. The Hawks fall to 2-3-0 on the year, 0-1 in the PacWest.
When the Lancers broke out of halftime in a 1-0 hole, they came out hungrier than ever looking for an equalizer. It came in the 65th minute as Desarae Felix sent in a perfect cross off a corner kick. Lauren Wallberg put herself in the right position and headed it home to make it 1-1 with plenty of time left on the clock.
"When Des sent the ball into the box, all I was thinking about was getting it in," said Wallberg, who found herself at the bottom of an excited dog pile initiated by Riley Phillips.
Even once more at 1-1, CBU had a renewed sense of life with just over 25 minutes remaining on the clock.
"[My goal] gave us energy and confidence," said Wallberg. "We've been struggling to score in our past games so it was nice to break the barrier. We were excited to be out there once again."
Justene Kesterson looked like she could give CBU the go-ahead goal it was looking for just two minutes later, but the HNU goalkeeper snuffed up the ball to keep her team in the game.
Determined to not go into overtime for the third time this year, Kesterson laid a ball off for Chaylin Couzens to run onto and she tucked it into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
HNU pressured the last eight minutes but Sara Escobedo and her back line held off the Hawks for the Lancers' first win of the season.
CBU looks to keep the momentum going as it closes out its first Northern California trip with a noon kickoff on Saturday at Dominican.
