GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- It would have been hard for California Baptist University to start the 2015-16 season any better than how it did on Monday morning, as it broke the program's team record for a single-round score.
The Lancers crushed the previous record of 290 by 10 strokes, ending the first round of the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate with a remarkable score of eight-under par 280 at the Coldwater Golf Club. The previous single-round mark was set in 2013 at the Birdies for Breast Cancer Tournament.
Spearheading the record was senior Tayler Hoag, who fired a four-under 68, her collegiate best. Her steady performance was stainless, as she carded no bogeys while hitting 11 fairways and 14 greens. Hoag's immaculate performance ties the school record for the individual round with junior Marvi Monsalve, who shot a 68 back at the 2014 WNMU Fall Intercollegiate.
As impressive as Hoag's showing was, it was a team effort that drove the Lancers to the top of the leaderboard. Junior Natalie Park and Monsalve both ended the day at two-under par and freshman Erica Wang wound up even (72) for the day.
The team averaged 12 greens and 12 fairways and displayed some pinpoint accuracy by hitting 29 approach shots within 15 feet.
"The ladies just played exceptional golf today," Coach John Hackney said. "We were very relaxed and accurate during our practice round and we carried that feeling right into the tournament."
The Lancers were far from finished however, as they broke yet another record with the top-five golfers collecting a joint 20 birdies, with four going to each of them.
"These ladies are very talented and it showed today," Hackney said. "They really had it going all day and showed great poise. I am proud of how they handled themselves and managed their games."
The women's team, which has made the last two NCAA Tournaments, enter the season ranked 13th after winning the PacWest title. The Lancers returned four of their top five players from that squad.
The Lancers, defending champs of the WNMU Invitational, are seven strokes ahead of second place team University of Redlands (287) going into tomorrow's final round.
