RIVERSIDE, Calif.— After reclaiming its spot at the top of the PacWest Conference last year,,California Baptist University's women's cross country opened the 2015 campaign with a dominant victory at the Lancer Invitational.
The 14th-ranked Lancers comfortably, beat out the four other teams — Riverside Community College, Chaffey College, Azusa Pacific and Concordia — in the 4K event, grabbing 26 points with six of the top nine finishers donning Lancer uniforms. The Cougars followed with 43 points and new conference foe Concordia took third with 86.

"I thought the women ran phenomenal today," said head coach Ben Gall. "It was exactly what we were hoping for."
Heading into the race, Gall wanted to see what his team could,do,well, what mistakes they would make and how they would work together.
On the top of the highlights was Caroline Barkechir's first-place finish. Newcomer Alana Enabnit (14:24.08), along with veterans Katie Deimling (14:33.97), Tori Dutchover (14:41.11), and Millie Leitich (14:54.87), followed Barkechir's lead to all finish in the top nine spots.
"Caroline ran against a caliber of girls with good credentials and we're very excited to see her compete with them," said Gall of his front-runner.
The 14:17.41 winning time marked Barkechir's first collegiate win of her career, something she wants to build upon this season, but not just individually. Last year, Barkechir was the Lone Lancer female at the NCAA Division II Championship meet, but this year she's looking for her teammates to join her.
"I thought we were going to do well as a team and work together," said Barkechir, who was surprised she won the event. "I wanted to work with my team and get better for the upcoming season."

At the new Riverside Cross Country Course, Barkechir opened up her stride heading into the final loop of the course and kept pushing to gain an insurmountable lead.
The Lancers will look to keep their form as they stay local and head to cross-town rivals University of California Riverside for their next meet, next Saturday at 7:00 a.m.
