SEATTLE — Coming off a tough overtime loss, California Baptist University came out ready to fight Saturday afternoon against Simon Fraser. The Lancers struck first, but the Clan found an equalizer before the game was called due to lightning in the area, resulting in a 1-1 tie with 17:17 still left on the clock.
Both CBU and SFU improve to 0-1-1 on the young season.
"We just played two of the top teams in the region," said Coach Gregg Schroeder about tonight and Thursday's competition. "We're going to struggle through some things, but there are a lot of good things we can take from this trip."
The Clan opened with back-to-back shots on goal, looking like it might be a long game for the Lancers.
Daniel Westholm had other ideas, however. It may have taken all of last season for the Swedish attacker to score his first collegiate goal, but it didn't take long in his sophomore campaign. Westholm fired off a shot into the top left corner of the net from just inside the 18-yard box.
"Dan's goal was just beautiful," said Schroeder. "He kind of got it off the half-volley and floated it past the goalkeeper into the back post."
A disgruntled SFU clan battled back and got what it was looking for just two minutes later off a free kick 25 yards out.
The Clan kept coming, trying to grab a go-ahead goal, but Noah Oyler and his defense held off the attempts. The sophomore goalkeeper finished the game with six saves, five of which came in the first half.
"Noah kept us in the game," said Schroeder. "He has been unbelievable the last two games. He's making big time, need-to-stop saves."
Coming out of halftime still tied at 1-1, Westholm tried to find another for the Lancers but just missed the frame. Taylor Moe found his fellow sophomore on a good combination. Westholm took a touch and tried to curve it far post, but was slightly off target.
"That would've put the game away," said Schroeder.
Less than a minute later, lightning struck. The blasts kept coming, forcing the game to get called with the score tied 1-1 and 17:17 remaining on the clock. Enough of the game was played, however, for the result to count.
CBU returns home for a slough of three games next week, including its home opener. The Lancers host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
"Our next three games will be tough," said Schroeder. "We struggled to find our identity a bit tonight. I'm hoping we'll use this as an opportunity to find out what we need to work on and be ready for our three games next week."
