BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Beginning just its third year as a fully-fledged NCAA Division II member, California Baptist University faced a former NAIA foe Saturday evening but couldn't come away with the victory. The perennial NAIA powerhouse Concordia (Ore.) walked away with the 2-1 result.
The loss drops the Lancers to 0-2-0 on the young year, while the Cavaliers improve to 2-0-0.
CU struck early twice, putting the Lancers on their heels for the rest of the half to walk into halftime down a 2-0 hole.
Shaking off the first half, CBU looked to control the ball more and get better looks on goal.
Ten minutes into the frame, Chaylin Couzens got a good look but her shot was blocked, sending it out for a corner kick. The Lancers couldn't find the back of the net just yet, but didn't have to wait much longer.
Grabbing her first collegiate point off an assist, Desarae Felix sent a through ball passed the Cavalier back line where Couzens ran onto it. Working her magic, Couzens kept her composure on the breakaway, taking a touch past the oncoming goalkeeper, and touched it home to cut the score to 2-1.
Once again, Sara Escobedo had to work to keep her team in the game and came up with a big penalty kick save in the 62nd minute.
Justene Kesterson looked like she might give the Lancers what they wanted just a minute later as she flicked a header shot toward the goal. She unfortunately connected with the crossbar, however, instead of finding the back of the net to keep the score at 2-1 in favor of CU.
As the clock wound down, desperation kicked in to find the equalizer and force extra time for the second game in a row. Miranda Martinez took a chance in the 87th minute, but the Cavalier goalkeeper pushed the ball wide of the net.
The Lancers had one last chance on the corner kick that followed, but couldn't get a shot off to end the game 2-1.
CBU returns home looking to bounce back and will have plenty of chances next week. The Lancers open at home on Thursday against Sonoma State at 3:00 p.m. and play once again two days later. CBU hosts UC San Diego on Saturday, kicking off at 1:00 p.m.
