RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the first time in program history, California Baptist University completed an undefeated regular season with a huge upset of NCAA Division II West Region rival UC San Diego on the Lancers' Senior Day Saturday.
CBU – ranked 12th in the division — came into the dual a heavy underdog against the fifth-ranked Tritons. It did not matter, as the Lancers overcame the formidable foe, 161-137, by winning 12 of the 16 events, backed by more dominant performances on the diving boards.
It puts a cap on a perfect season for CBU, as it finishes 6-0 in dual meets this season and also won all four invitationals where team scores were kept this season.
"This is the biggest dual meet in CBU history today," said Coach Rick Rowland, who founded the program back in 1999. "Both teams came to swim and dive today. Now we'll see what we're made of when we meet them at NCAAs, they are a very deep team and one of the best we've ever faced."
To make it even sweeter, the women won and knocked off second-ranked UCSD 173-127. It is the first time the Lancers swept both UC San Diego teams in one dual.
"We've had many undefeated seasons going into the last dual meet of the season against UCSD and lost, so to win both was a historic day," Rowland said. "It's a banner day in CBU history, I couldn't be prouder or more excited for the kids going into the conference meet.
"We've been prepping for this meet all week, and we really stepped up today and had some great swims," Rowland concluded.
There were several speedy times and big winners for CBU. Alexis Ohmar and Josh Hanson each won all four of their events to supply the Lancers with plenty of points. The duo started the day out with Jean Pierre Monteagudo and Bernardo Gonzalez Valentim for a win in the 400-yard medley with an impressive time of three minutes, 22.94 seconds.
Ohmar won three individual freestyle events with times of 46.15 seconds, 1:42.01 and 4:39.76 in the 100, 200 and 500-yard freestyles, respectively. Each of those teams were less than a second or within two seconds of consideration standards: 100 free (46.04), 200 free (1:41.44) and 500 free (4:38.08).
Hanson also claimed three individual victories for the Lancers, with times of 50.18 in the 100 backstroke, 1:47.58 in the 200 backstroke and 3:58.99 in the 400 individual medley. His 200 back and 400 IM times were well under the B cuts (1:50.31 200 back, 4:03.99 400 IM) and not too far off the automatic qualifiers (1:45.05, 3:52.37).
Monteagudo brought home two solo wins by taking both butterflies, clocking in at 50.83 in the 100 and 1:51.25 in the 200.
"I was feeling really good today, and I had some really good swims," Monteagudo said. "My underwater kicking and my turns were key today."
It was a welcome sight for Rowland.
"JP [Monteagudo] has been a tremendous addition to our depth, and you can see how good we are now with him in there," Rowland said.
Robert Griffith won the 1000 free in nine minutes, 41.78 seconds, as well.
Zachary Parry was another two-time winner for the Lancers, doing his work on the diving boards – winning the one-meter with 272.63 points and the three-meter with 272.70.
Senior Kendall Rummell ended his home career by taking second on the one-meter (255.60) and fourth on the three-meter (230.70). Andrew Rotundo returned to the lineup and performed six dives on the one-meter, piling up 218.55 points.
"It's fun and exciting to be able to contribute to these wins," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "It reminds us and the swimmers that we are all one team. We all rely on each other and that's what a team is all about."
"I love this team and how everyone cheers for each other," added Monteagudo.
