RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After five games on the road, California Baptist University finally returned home and kicked off a five-game home stand with a big 5-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur, scoring three goals in four minutes.
The Lancers improved to 9-4 overall, 5-3 in the PacWest, while the Argonauts drop to 7-6 on the year, 5-3 in conference. The win moves CBU into a tie for third with NDNU, Azusa Pacific and Chaminade. Dixie State currently leads the PacWest with an undefeated 8-0 record in conference.
"We were excited to get home after five games on the road," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "With a few key guys missing today, we had to try something different and James [Bogdanovich] obviously stepped up big time."
From the first to last whistle, it was all CBU pressuring. The Lancers finished with 19 shots on the day, putting nine on goal.
Luca Tschaidse got the offense going for the Lancers in just the third minute of the game, bouncing his shot off the crossbar.
It wasn't until the 33rd minute when CBU broke through to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Guerra sent a ball into the left side of the 18-yard box where Caley Powers curled a left-footed shot into the near post for Powers' first career goal.
NDNU came out of halftime hoping to turn things around, but soon found itself in a huge hole.
In a span of four minutes and 11 seconds, CBU scored three goals to hold a commanding 4-0 lead. James Bogdanovich rattled off the first two goals, off assists from Powers (74th minute) and Guerra (76th minute), before assisting Sebastian Wiesboeck on his first goal of the year in the 78th minute.
Five minutes later, the Argonauts conceded an own goal to all but seal the victory for CBU. NDNU managed to sneak a goal of its own in the 88th minute, but it was a little too late as the Lancers walked away with the 5-1 victory.
The Lancers turn right around to host Dominican University of California on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., hoping to build on their three-game winning streak.
"We have it all to play for and our motto at this point is that the only thing we care about is the next game," added Michaelson. "We are starting to build momentum and it's important that we carry the same attitude into Saturday and take nothing for granted."
