RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In a hard-fought battle, California Baptist University was forced into double overtime and ultimately prevailed as victors, beating Dominican University of California 1-0 Saturday.
The Lancers improve to 10-4 overall, 6-3 in the PacWest with the late victory. CBU sits in third in the conference standings, while Dixie State is at the top with an undefeated PacWest record. The Penguins now stand 3-11-1 on the year and 3-6-1 in the conference.
"Today was a very difficult game," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "Dominican was very committed defensively and were very good on the counter-attack. With that in mind, we were creating chances and we told the guys just to stay disciplined defensively and eventually the goal would come. In the end, it was a great goal and third time lucky charm for Luca [Tschaidse] after hitting the frame twice. It was a great team effort to grind it out."
CBU was the more aggressive team all game as it tallied 23 shot attempts compared to Dominican's nine.
When the Penguins had their chances, however, Riley Mayne and his defense came up big to keep the visitors out of the net. The freshman goalkeeper took command of his box, often coming out with authority to snatch crosses out of the air.
Daniel Westholm came very close to putting the Lancers in front in regulation, firing off a near-post shot with just under 22 minutes to play in the second half.
After a scoreless regulation, the Lancers came out eager to get the golden goal in extra time. Aidan Apodaca gave CBU some hope with three minutes left in the first overtime period, getting in on a breakaway with the Penguin goalkeeper, but Christian Lathrop stuffed up any attempt to send the two teams into another 10-minute period.
The play of the game came in the 105th minute as Tschaidse scored the golden goal. Lathrop tried to shut down another Lancer breakaway, but couldn't hold onto the ball. Tschaidse took advantage of the rebound and hammered it home for the game-winner.
CBU faces defending PacWest Champion Fresno Pacific on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. With only four games left on the schedule, each game is pivotal for a chance at the conference title and moving on into postseason.
