ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – Heading into its winter break, California Baptist University wanted to go into the hiatus on a high note at the primarily NCAA Division I Lady Mustang Tournament.
Another strong second round ensured that, as the sixth-ranked Lancers in Division II shot 304 over the final 18 holes to move up to a third-place finish with a 614 total (310-304). CBU was only bested by D-I schools Santa Clara (582) and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (586) at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
"Our team goal was to move up and get third place in this Division I tournament," Coach Marc Machado said. "After day one, we were too far behind the first and second-place teams, but third was definitely in reach. The team showed a lot of heart and determination today."
The Lancers finish the first half of their season without finishing outside the top four at their first four tournaments.
"Our expectations as a team are higher than getting third place, but it was a step in the right direction for us and a nice way to end our fall," Machado said.
Still, Division I teams like Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Cal State Northridge, Boise State and Bakersfield all finished behind CBU.
"They now know they can compete at the highest level," Machado said of his team. "I'm especially proud of the team for finishing strong today. All five ladies played their last four holes today at a combined even par, which is awesome."
All five Lancers played a part in their team's success in the second round, as they used an 80 as their drop score – a shot lower than the 81 they discarded the day before -- quite a feat on the tricky greens. Marvi Monsalve was the biggest contributor, though, as she improved nine strokes from her first round to shoot even-par 72 over the final 18 holes.
"I'm very proud of Marvi for bouncing back," Machado said. "She was not feeling the best the first day and really pulled through for the team. She is the type of player that we can count on to come in clutch for us and she did just that for us today."
Laura Scrivner wound up placing highest for CBU overall, with a 12th-place finish, after shooting 75 in the second round for a 152 (77-75). Monsalve took 15th with a 153 (81-72), as she moved 20 spots up the leaderboard from one round to the next.
Erica Wang joined Scrivner and Monsalve by improving from round one to two. The sophomore carded a 77 and ended up in 21st with a 156 (79-77).
Samantha Martirez and Natalie Park both tied for 24th on the 53-player leaderboard by shooting identical 157s and matching each other in both rounds (77-80).
CBU will take just over a three-month break before picking its season back up on Feb. 6th at Point Loma's Super San Diego Championships at the Riverwalk Golf Club.
"We are already thinking about the next semester and will focus and work very hard this offseason in preparation for the spring," Machado said.
