CHICO, Calif. – A dominant third round, including the fifth-lowest team score in program history, secured 12th-ranked California Baptist University a third-place finish at the competitive Interwest Insurance Wildcat Classic on Tuesday.
All four scorers checking in at one-over par, along with three par-or-better rounds, led the Lancers to a five-under-par 283 team score on Tuesday. It was the lowest team total in the three-round, 16-team tournament. CBU amassed an 879 total to finish two shots off the victors -- sixth-ranked Chico State and Western Washington (877) – after it sat in seventh place through the first two rounds.
Greg Gonzalez, Trevor Lampson and Kendel Hodges all shot at least par on Tuesday. Gonzalez and Lampson each birdied six times, with Gonzalez carding four-under-par 68 and Lampson going two-under 70. Hodges notched an eagle for the second tournament in a row to finish at even-par 72.
Lampson took fourth overall in the 92-player tournament, with a two-over 216 (70-76-70). Two strokes behind, Gonzalez joined him in the top seven at 218 (75-75-68).
Christian Sanders gave CBU all four scorers at 73 or better, with three birdies, as he turned in his best round of the young season. He shot 76 or better in all three rounds to take 31st with a 223 (76-74-73).
Hodges ended the tournament in 42nd, with a 225 (77-76-72), as he improved in each round. Tai Kuida collected a 230 (77-73-80) to take 62nd.
CBU takes a week off before traveling to Seaside, Calif. for Cal State Monterey Bay's Otter Invitational Oct. 17-18 at the Black Horse Golf Course.
