CLAREMONT, Calif. – A day after California Baptist University opened its Western Water Polo Association season, the 15th-ranked Lancers did not rest and picked back up non-conference play at the Gary Troyer Tournament.
Victories over La Verne and Chapman on respective scores of 19-7 and 16-7 improved CBU's record to 11-7. The Lancers controlled both games on Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps from start to finish, scoring the first six goals of each matchup.
Both games gave the Lancers the opportunity to integrate two-meter Jonathan Lotero back into the offense after he'd missed the previous 13 games of the season coming into the week. So far, the junior transfer from Citrus College has scored in all three games he's played in since returning from injury, with three overall on Friday.
Brent Teraoka scored a hat trick in each game for six goals in all on the day. Joseph Moorman logged 23 saves after posting 15 in the first game with the Leopards.
CBU opened the first game on a 6-0 run over four minutes, 20 seconds, with Logan Mena and Elad Gunya each scoring twice in that span. La Verne fought back within three goals, 6-3, but a 4-0 charge from the Lancers gave them a seven-goal cushion with 3:25 left in the first half.
Overall, Royce Daniel Laverne, Ryan Sargis, Caleb Rogers and Tanner Shore all joined Teraoka, Mena and Gunya with multiple goals in the contest.
Beyond the first six goals, the Lancers went on a 9-1 run to start their game with Chapman that finally ended at the 3:26 mark of the first half. Dominick Nevarez and Teraoka both scored twice in that opening run. CBU did not let up and built its advantage as high as 10 points, 13-3, with 5:48 remaining in the third quarter.
Teddy Forte put up an all-around game against Chapman. He scored three goals, forced six turnovers and even added an assist. Teraoka finished with a hat trick in the game, while Lotero scored twice, as well, versus the Panthers. Sargis pitched in a goal and two steals in the game. True freshman Kyle Johnson produced a goal and assist in Friday's finale, too.
