RIVERSIDE, Calif. – With all the attention on California Baptist University's divers, they rose to the occasion during the Lancer Diving Invitational.
Zach Parry and Andrew Rotundo placed first and second, respectively, on both the 1 and 3-meter boards Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Parry set two new records for the Lancers, while Rotundo qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships on both boards.
CBU went head-to-head with fellow D-II power UC San Diego, allowing them to complete an 11-dive list for both boards.
"It gives us perspective of where we're at and allows us to dive a championship-style, 11-dive list," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "It also gives us more and more experience for the meets that count at conference and nationals."
Parry produced pool and school records for the Lancers, with scores of 544.80 points on the 1-meter board and 567.75 on the 3-meter.
Parry's 1-meter score was more than 29 points better than Hall of Famer Ben Wahlman's previous school record (515) set back in 2009. His 3-meter mark was more than 30 points above Wahlman's record (533.40) from 2008.
"Records are meant to be broken and they were definitely broken today," Couto said. "[Parry] just dove phenomenally well. He was outstanding."
Rotundo qualified for nationals, with 11-dive scores of 446.25 and 488.25 on the 1 and 3-meter, respectively. His 3-meter score is the third best personal record in CBU history.
"They both dove great, we have been fighting to be mentally disciplined and focused," Couto said. "I have seen the rewards from the time they've spent working."
