Racing To Nationals

BILLINGS, Mont. — No. 16-ranked California Baptist University ran a strong race at the NCAA Division II West Regional Saturday morning to qualify as a team for the national championship later in November.
"Overall, the guys had a good day," said Coach Ben Gall. "They raced exactly how we talked about. They faded a little at the end, but most of the race we were well clear of fifth."
It was the first time the team ran a 10K this year – the men run 8K races all year until regionals and nationals – but the Lancers responded with 156 team points to take fifth overall at Amend Park in Billings, Mont. The top-five performance sends CBU to the NCAA Division II Championship Meet in St. Leo, Fla., on Nov. 19, marking the third time the Lancers will compete at the D-II championship.
Valentin Robert led the pack with a top-20 individual performance to earn his second-straight All-West Region honor. The senior crossed the finish line in 30 minutes, 41.09 seconds to take 18th overall. It improved on his last year's 22nd-place finish, but just missed a personal best by three seconds.
Ken Kipkorir followed with a time of 31:03.63 for 29th overall. Fellow sophomore Jayden Emerson wasn't far behind, taking 32nd after clocking in at 31:05.46. Anthony Lozano and William Ernst rounded out the five scoring Lancers with respective times of 31:17.23 (38th) and 31:18.46 (39th).
While he didn't score, Michael Lowrie took 48th overall with a time of 31:37.80 to displace scoring runners for other teams. Dennis Messmer, who was battling some illness, rounded out the runners for the Lancers, crossing the finish in 33:50.44.
CBU heads to the NCAA Division II Championship in two weeks and for the first time in program history, both men's and women's teams will compete in the field after the women took sixth at the regional to advance.
