CBU Opens on the Road

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A new season opened with a challenge as California Baptist University traveled to NCAA Division I Bakersfield for its first event of the season.
The 13th-ranked Lancers looked to upset the Roadrunners and notched 12 of the first 15 points, but could not overcome Bakersfield in a 29-12 loss. CBU received wins from Nolan Kistler, Nick Fiegener and Paul Head in the season-opening dual.
Next week, the Lancers travel to Cal Poly for another Division I dual in San Luis Obispo Saturday at noon. CBU starts the season at 0-1 and Bakersfield is 1-0.
Despite the loss, the Lancers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Kistler started things off in the 174-pound weight class, with a 4-2 decision victory over Bakersfield's Matt Penyacsek. Fiegener turned in the most impressive performance in his CBU debut and majored Dylan Bollinger in the 184 match, 16-3.
Armed with a 7-0 lead, CBU dropped the 197 bout but bounced back when Head logged a technical-fall win over Roadrunner heavyweight Alex Encarnacion-Strand for a 12-3 lead near the halfway mark of the dual.
