RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Dixie State managed to take one off No. 3-ranked California Baptist University Thursday night with a close 75-71 result.
The Lancers drop to 8-1 overall, 2-1 in the PacWest, with their first loss of the season. The Trailblazers improve to 5-3, 2-0 in conference with the win.
Michael Smith and Kalidou Diouf both finished the night in double figures. Smith put up 27 points, while Diouf grabbed a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
It was a close battle for the full 40 minutes, with neither team really able to distance itself from the other.
CBU got its largest lead of the night with just under four minutes before halftime. Diouf banked in a shot and drew a foul in the process to round it up to three, 27-19.
The Trailblazers cut the margin down to just five, 34-29, heading into halftime and turned things around in the second half. DSU managed to take advantage of some offensive mishaps by the Lancers to take its highest lead of the night, 59-50, but CBU wasn't ready to give up yet.
In the final two minutes, the Lancers battled to force extra time, but couldn't quite get the shots to fall, dropping the 75-71 result.
CBU gets a week to regroup before hosting Fresno Pacific on December 17th at 7:00 p.m.
