Lancers Ready to Defend Their House
12/14/2016 10:40:00 AM | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Ever since the hoops season started, both California Baptist University teams have consistently ranked in the top-10 of the NCAA Division II. That trend continued as the latest NABC/Division II Men's Poll and WBCA/Division II Women's Poll each listed CBU as the No. 10 team.
The Lancers will look to close out the 2016 portion of their season on a high note, hosting a combined five games in the Van Dyne Gym before 2017. When it comes to Van Dyne, both teams know how to defend it well. The women are currently on a 21-game unbeaten streak at home and the men boast a 52-3 record in the confines of Van Dyne since the 2013-14 season.
"You don't build a great home court advantage without loyal supporters, and ours truly have made Van Dyne a special place to compete," said head men's coach Rick Croy. "The passion and energy exhibited each and every night by our fans really has had a profound effect on our team and we are excited to see them come out yet again this Saturday and Monday in our last two games before Christmas."
"Van Dyne is a great place for basketball," added women's coach Jarrod Olson. "The fans are awesome and really have an impact on the game. It is the best home court advantage in the PacWest. It is a real privilege to be able to play in such a great environment."
CBU's women (11-2, 3-0 PacWest) take on conference-foe Fresno Pacific on Saturday and non-conference opponent Saint Martin's on Monday, both with 5:00 p.m. tip times.
As a team, the Lancers rank eighth in all of the division in scoring offense, averaging 84.7 points per game. Cassidy Mihalko leads that charge with a 20.3 ppg average, sitting 16th in the nation. Kamille Diaz helps spark that offense, dishing out an average of 5.3 assists per game to rank 31st in the division. CBU also ranks sixth overall in field-goal percentage (48.4), 18th in free-throw percentage (76.8), 12th in three-pointers per game (9.2) and 26th in three-point field-goal percentage (37.7).
The Lancer men (8-1, 2-1 PacWest) also host the Sunbirds on Saturday before taking a break from PacWest action to challenge Cal State San Marcos on Monday and Life Pacific on December 29. All games tip off at 7:00 p.m.
CBU currently ranks in multiple statistical categories, including 26th in scoring margin (14.3), 69th in scoring offense (83.3 ppg), seventh in free-throw percentage (79.8) and 67th in blocked shots per game (3.8).
Michael Smith leads the Lancers and ranks fifth in all of the division with a 25.3 ppg average. Kalidou Diouf ranks second overall in field-goal percentage, boasting an impressive 76.3-percent from the field – it's just .6 percent behind the top shooter.
Tickets start at $3 a person, with groups of 15 or more getting free admission. For more information about group tickets, email Director of Ticketing Zack LaGuardia at zlaguardia@calbaptist.edu.
