Stowell Stands Tall in Split

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Dylan Stowell may officially be the third starting pitcher for California Baptist University, but he continued to show he takes a back seat to no one Friday.
In the third start of his career and the season, Stowell led CBU to a big 6-1 win and doubleheader split with fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa at Totman Stadium. The Mavericks won the opener 5-4, but the Lancers bounced back behind a complete-game gem from Stowell. The right hander struck out a career-high 11 batters and allowed just four hits and two walks on just 107 pitches.
"I didn't want to overthink it, I just wanted to compete with each pitch, hit the spots and what will be, will be," Stowell said. "If I can go out there, know what I can do, place the ball where I want and where it's called, then I know we will have success."
The Lancers' record moves to 6-3 this season, while CMU is dealt its first loss at 5-1. The series concludes Saturday at noon at Totman Stadium, with CBU looking to keep the momentum going by earning a series split.
"A split at this point against this team would be huge," Stowell said. "Hopefully we can keep this going into tomorrow."
Stephen Lohr led CBU's offense Friday, batting 4-for-8 with two doubles, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Alec Morabito also batted .500 (3-for-6) with a double and run scored. Jake Gallaway (2-for-3), Mark Sanchez (2-for-6) and Andrew Montoya (2-for-8) each had two-hit days.
Montoya had a hit in each game to continue his nine-game hitting streak to open the year. He is the only Lancer to hit aboard in every contest so far.
"We have been putting good swings on the ball, we just haven't been finding the gaps," Stowell said. "We'd been competing well and just hadn't been getting the breaks, I don't think."
After seeing CMU get the earlier 5-4 win in the ninth, CBU's offense jumpstarted and scored right away in the bottom of the first. Zack Norris started it out with a full-count walk and a wild pitch moved him up to second. With two outs and a 2-2 count, Lohr laced a single into right field for the first run of the game.
Stowell retired the first nine batters he faced, and induced a 5-4-3 double-play grounder in the fifth to keep the Mavericks off the board. He was awarded with an insurance run in the bottom half. Alec Morabito opened the frame with a 1-2 double into right field, and moved to third on a Sheldon Borson grounder to first. A suicide-squeeze bunt from Norris plated Morabito for the 2-0 cushion.
Three hits and two errors yielded three more CBU runs in the sixth. Bryce Macy brought home the first run with a bases-loaded single smoked to first base on a 2-2 count. An error on the play brought in another run, and a fielder's choice grounder from Borson scored the third run of the inning for a 5-0 CBU advantage.
For the first time in the game, Stowell found himself in some danger in the seventh. The Mavericks got on the board with three-straight singles in the inning. A sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with one out and a walk loaded the bases with just the one out.
Despite action in the bullpen, Stowell was never pulled and he ended the threat with a three-pitch strikeout and a line drive into right field to keep CBU in front, 5-1. Stowell picked up steam and retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth, striking out four batters down the stretch.
Gallaway capped the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth. Macy and Morabito set the table with a walk and single, respectively.
In Friday's opener, CBU came out hot again and scored twice in the first after back-to-back, two-out doubles from Antonio Chavarria and Lohr. Sanchez kept the two-out rally going with an RBI single up the middle.
Colorado Mesa showed its mettle by scoring the next four runs, with two each in the second and third innings. CBU fought back into a tie, 4-4, in the bottom of the third.
Montoya and Ruhm started the inning with a walk and single, respectively. They moved up a base on a Chavarria grounder and another grounder from Lohr scored Montoya. A two-out single from Sanchez would cash in Ruhm and tie things once again.
After the hot start, both offenses cooled in the middle of the game. CMU came out with the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth.
