Coming Through In A Pinch

LOS ANGELES – Pinch hitters came through, well, in a pinch for California Baptist University Friday night. In danger of dropping its first series of the season, Tyler Johnson provided a breakthrough for the Lancers in the top of the 11th inning at Cal State Los Angeles. The junior singled into center field to score Stephen Lohr, who led off the frame with a single, for the game-winning run in a 5-4, extra-inning affair.
"I got in a 1-2 count and thought nothing more than what we're taught with two strikes," Johnson said, "stay in the middle of the diamond and have a quality team at-bat."
Johnson turned in one of those just when needed, sending a changeup into center field for a single to score Lohr from second. Zack Norris moved Lohr into scoring position with a sacrifice before Johnson's heroics.
"I was looking fastball, but just reacted, trying to hit the ball hard up the middle," Johnson said.
CBU and CSULA both start 2016 with a 1-1 record. The series rubber match plays out Saturday at Totman Stadium at noon. While the season wasn't riding on Friday, it does give the Lancers some pep headed into the finale.
"It's game two of 50, we can't clinch playoffs tonight, but it did put a good taste in our mouth," Johnson said.
Patrick Gonzales got the win and continued to impress early on this year for CBU. The right-handed relief pitcher threw two shutout innings where he allowed just one run. The senior struck out two batters and walked just one over the ninth and 10th innings.
With a senior earning the win, true freshman Justin Montgomery logged the save in his collegiate debut, allowing just one walk in the bottom of the 11th to seal the victory. Starter Jeremy McDonald allowed just one earned run and struck out eight batters over the first 5.1 innings.
Brian Ruhm carried his momentum over from the season opener, with his two-run double in the top of the third providing the first runs of the night. Sheldon Borson led off the inning with a single through the side. An Alec Morabito walk and bunt single from Montoya loaded the bases with no outs. Ruhm bashed a single up the middle to score the two lead runners.
Another Lancer pinch hitter, D.J. Porter, helped extend the game in the seventh inning.
It all started with a one-out walk to A.J. David, who was replaced by pinch runner Zack Norris. A walk to pinch hitter Bryce Macy put runners on first and second, and a single into right center from another pinch hitter – Jake Gallaway – was soured when Norris was cut down trying to score from second.
With two outs and runners still at first and second, CBU Coach Gary Adcock turned to a pinch hitter for the third time in a row. It was certainly the charm, as Porter doubled down the right-field line to score Macy from second to make it 3-2 Lancers.
CBU got some insurance when Andrew Montoya forced a run-scoring error from the pitcher on the next play. It was needed, as the Golden Eagles scored twice in the eighth to send the game into extras tied 4-4.
