Offensive Onslaught in Opener

CBU posted season-highs in runs and hits, with 23, to improve to 14-5, 4-1 in the PacWest. Three Lancers – Antonio Chavarria, Stephen Lohr and Brian Ruhm – had four hits in the win. Andrew Montoya and A.J. David had three hits, as well, to drop the Hawks to 4-14, 2-3.
Games two and three of the series will be played in a nine-and-seven inning doubleheader Friday at Totman Stadium. Due to rain in the forecast, the games were moved up to a 10 a.m. start. The series concludes Saturday at noon.
"We can't get complacent, we still need to win the series and we have the opportunity to do that tomorrow," Ruhm said. "It all starts with game one, though. We need to get some rest tonight and come out early and ready to throw the first punch again tomorrow."
Chavarria drove in four runs and scored twice while going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a homer Thursday. Ruhm and Lohr both collected three runs batted in and two scored, while Lohr (4-for-6) had a home run and a double and Ruhm (4-for-5) also doubled.
Montoya had two doubles, three runs and an RBI in his 3-for-6 performance. David also scored twice and had an RBI.
"They always say hitting is contagious," Ruhm said. "If you get a couple hits and guys like Antonio and Lohr get some good swings to get on top, then you can relax a little bit and put some swings together."
Despite the lopsided finish, there was no score through the first two innings. Chavarria got the avalanche started with a solo homer in the third. Lohr helped blow the game open with a three-run shot in the fifth. The Lancers jumped out in front 7-0 in that inning behind RBI doubles from Montoya and Sanchez and an RBI single from Ruhm.
Holy Names made things a little interesting with two runs in the sixth. There was almost a third, but a Hawk was cut down trying to score on a throw home from Norris in right field to end the inning with CBU up 7-2.
Chavarria and David made it a seven-run lead again, 9-2, with an RBI double and single, respectively, in the sixth.
But once again, HNU showed no quit with two more runs in the seventh. The Lancers prevented any potential drama with a nine-run bottom of the half that saw them go through 13 batters and collect eight hits for an 18-4 cushion. Norris, Chavarria, Sanchez, Ruhm and Sheldon Borson all had RBI hits in the inning.
In the midst of the offensive onslaught were two exciting feats for two of CBU's true freshmen. Garrett Dabney collected his first hit and RBI at the collegiate level to cap the scoring in the bottom of the eighth as he smashed one through the middle of the infield. Austin Johnson made his collegiate debut, as well, throwing the final two innings on the mound for CBU without allowing a run.
Tyson Miller turned in a strong start for the Lancers, striking out eight batters and allowing just six base runners on four hits and two walks. He recorded the win to improve to 3-2 this season.
