RIVERSIDE, Calif. – When its offense was held in check, California Baptist University's pitching staff stepped up to secure a series sweep of Hawaii Hilo last week.
Dylan Stowell and Jeremy McDonald threw consecutive shutouts against the Vulcans in last Thursday's doubleheader and as a result were named co-Pitchers of the Week by the PacWest on Monday morning. Stowell and McDonald both allowed just six base runners in their respective nine and seven-inning complete-games performances that resulted in 1-0 and 2-0 Lancer wins.
It is Stowell's fourth weekly conference award in seven chances this season, and the first for McDonald in 2016, but second in his two-year career at CBU.
In game one, Hawaii Hilo managed just five hits and a walk off Stowell, who struck out six. He stranded Vulcans in scoring position in the first, third and seventh innings. He retired the side in order in the second, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth frames.
McDonald allowed just four hits and two walks in the finale. He struck out nine over seven innings, and retired the side in order in the fifth through seventh frames, including the final three batters he faced.
Stowell improved to 6-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 50 strikeouts, while McDonald moved to 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA and 53 strikeouts. The duo rank first and second in the PacWest in strikeouts. In Division II, Stowell ranks 19th in ERA and 21st in strikeouts. McDonald is 11th in strikeouts and 55th in ERA. Overall, the Lancers ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II in team earned-run average (2.18) and second in shutouts (five).
CBU continues play in Hawaii, visiting Hawaii Pacific, this week. The Lancers and Sharks play Tuesday through Thursday, with first pitch set for 9 p.m. PDT to open and close the series. Wednesday's doubleheader will begin at 7 p.m.
