SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Drive, determination and grit have all been characteristics of California Baptist University this season.
The 2015-16 campaign has been one to remember, with the Lancers setting new program records and upsetting ranked teams in NCAA Division I and II, all while showing off exciting, technical wrestling. With the NCAA Division II Championships here on Friday morning, CBU looks to finish off what has already been a successful season, with five wrestlers -- half its lineup -- ready to leave their mark on this year.
After winning a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship for the first time, the ninth-ranked Lancers went on to place second at the Super Region IV Tournament, behind No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney.
At regionals, CBU won two individual titles, thanks to 157-pounder Brady Bersano and 184 Jake Waste. Nolan Kistler (165) and Joe Fagiano (heavyweight) both finished second at regionals, while 197 Paul Head took third. All five will look to add to build on their victories on the national stage this week. These men also have the opportunity to become CBU's first ever wrestling national-championship team in the NCAA.
Of the aforementioned wrestlers, Waste is currently the only one who holds an All-American award, placing fifth at NCAAs last year. Bersano and Kistler both have national experience under their belts, with Bersano advancing in 2014 and Kistler doing so last season.
Four Lancers, including Waste, have claimed NCAA Division II All-American status before. There will hopefully be more added to that list this weekend.
The NCAA Division II Championships start Friday at 9 a.m. PST. Preliminary matches and first-round wrestle-backs will kick things off, followed by quarterfinal matches at 2:30 p.m. All other information about the tournament can be found here.
