Sea Lions Shutout By CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Determined to keep his team in the hunt for a PacWest championship, pitcher Dylan Stowell gave one of the guttiest performances of the season and started California Baptist University out to a 4-0 shutout of Point Loma on Friday night.
Despite waking up with a cold in the morning, Stowell was determined to help his team grind out a win against the Sea Lions. It was unsure he would be able to pitch until he received clearance from the athletic trainer just a few hours before the game. Good thing he did, as Stowell turned in another strong start.
"I just wanted to focus on making the next pitch and getting the next out," Stowell said. "I didn't even want to let myself think about being sick.
"Sometimes you just have to grind it out, even when you're not feeling great."
Far from a one-man show, the Lancers bullpen kept the shutout intact to record CBU's eighth shutout of the year. The Lancers improved to 32-8, 22-4 in the PacWest with the win. Stowell scattered six hits and four walks over six innings and struck out six. In relief, Patrick Gonzales threw 1.2 scoreless innings, while Brody Robinson recorded the final four outs for his fourth save of the season.
Point Loma dropped to 23-15, 12-12 in conference, with the series concluding with a noon doubleheader on Saturday in Riverside.
Tyler Johnson, Ryan Williams and Antonio Chavarria each went 2-for-4 in the win, including doubles from both Johnson and Williams. Johnson also scored, drove in a run and stole a base.
It was one of a season-high five stolen bases for the Lancers, who also had Williams, Stephen Lohr, Mark Sanchez and Alec Morabito notch a hit and stolen base in the contest. Sanchez extended his hitting streak to 10 games, as well, with a double.
Johnson started the bottom of the first with a four-pitch walk and then stole second with one out, moving all the way to third on a throwing error. It allowed him to score on an A.J. David grounder to second base for a quick 1-0 lead.
Both offenses were quiet up until the sixth inning when the Lancers built up a four-run cushion. Chavarria sparked the rally with a leadoff single, and a throwing error off a hard-hit ball from Sanchez put runners at the corners with no outs. Andrew Montoya then plated Chavarria with a deep sacrifice fly to center field.
Point Loma recorded the second out, but CBU was not done yet. Morabito laced a one-run single into right field and then Johnson doubled into left center to score Morabito from first for the 4-0 lead.
"Our offense is good, you just can't keep us down," Stowell said. "I know eventually we are going to break through. I just try to do my job and put zeros up on the board, so they can go score."
In the top of the seventh, the Sea Lions threatened with a leadoff single, but Gonzales immediately induced a 6-4-3 double-play grounder to silence the rally. Sanchez then cut down a Point Loma player attempting to steal to end the inning.
With two outs and runners at first and second in the top of the eighth, Robinson came on for the favorable leftie-leftie matchup. Two pitches later, he got a soft grounder to first to end the inning. He stayed on for the ninth, striking out two batters and then got a slow comebacker to himself to end the game.
