Magic Runs Out in Finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – There was a lot of magic for California Baptist University in its series with Concordia this weekend, but it just ran out in the finale Saturday morning at Totman Stadium.
After trailing by as many as seven, the seventh-ranked Lancers fought back within three but could not win their second-straight game on a walk-off in an 8-4 loss to the Eagles. CBU maintains a two-and-a-half game lead in the PacWest standings at 30-8, 20-4 in conference. CUI improved to 20-21, 16-12.
CBU's next game will be played at Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Wednesday, April 20th at 7:05 p.m. It will begin the Lancers' series with Point Loma, which will continue at Totman Stadium April 22-23.
Stephen Lohr continued his campaign for the PacWest Player of the Year award by going 3-for-5 with a run scored for CBU. Fellow bash brother A.J. David also had three hits (3-for-4), with a run batted in and scored. Jake Gallaway was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run in the series finale, as well.
Like it had a majority of the series, Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. CBU tied things up in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out Gallaway double and RBI grounder from Andrew Montoya.
The Eagles appeared to blow the game open by scoring six runs over the sixth and seventh innings. CBU, however, was determined to get back in it and put up three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull within 7-4.
Lohr sparked the rally with a one-out, 0-2 single up the middle. Antonio Chavarria scored him with a double to the left-center gap, and David made it two-straight RBI doubles when he laced one into right field.
Then with two outs, pinch-hitter John Taurinsky lined a single into right and Gallaway added an 0-2 infield single to score David. Tyler Johnson looked to keep the rally going with a hot shot up the middle, but the Concordia pitcher snagged it out of the air for the third out.
Despite another Eagle run in the top half, Zack Norris kept hope for a walk-off alive with a leadoff, pinch-hit single in the ninth for CBU. The Eagles would turn a double play and hold on for its one win of the series, though.
