SAN FRANCISCO — In its last meet before the NCAA Division II Championship Meet, California Baptist University looked to better its times and hopefully qualify more runners for the championship in Florida. While some provisional marks were just seconds away from being met Saturday at the USF West Coast Last Chance Meet, the groundwork was laid for the years to come.
"Today was a solid day," said Coach Ben Gall. "We have a lot of young people knocking on the door so that's good."
Katie Deimling beat her previous CBU record by shaving two seconds off the time of 10 minutes, 48.18 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She finished Saturday's race in 10:46.07, which was good for third place overall. While Deimling already had an NCAA provisional mark, the time increases her chances of making her first appearance at the championships in two weeks.
Fellow CBU record holder Berenice Cleyet-Merle didn't better her time in the 800-meter race, but took fourth overall with a time of 2:09.34, about one second off her best time. She has one guaranteed spot in the DII meet in the 1500m — which she also holds the program record in (4:23.24) — and has a provisional mark in the 800m (2:08.41).
Emeline Delanis was only a second off grabbing her first provisional mark, clocking in at 4:35.21 in the 1500m race. She took sixth overall, behind all but one Division I athletes.
"Emeline ran awesome," said Gall. "She got a personal record and was so close to qualifying."
The Lancers head to Bradenton, Fla., May 26-28 for the Division II Championship. Last year, CBU produced two All-Americans at the meet, including one podium placement, and will look to better that performance this year.
