DENVER, Colo. -- An impressive freshman season came to a close for California Baptist University's Erica Wang on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Championships at the CommonGround Golf Course.
After taking third place in the Division II regional round, the PacWest Freshman of the Year finished 67th in Division II with a 327 (82-80-79-86). Gabrielle Shipley of Grand Valley State won the individual title with a 282. Rollins College won the team championship with a 1173.
"(Assistant) Coach [Marc] Machado, myself and every other participant here at the national championships were amazed that Erica completed the 72-hole tournament," Coach John Hackney said. "She was so sick that most players would have quit. She did not. At times, she barely had the strength to swing the club but still pushed on."
Wang will look to take the experience she gained this season -- from winning the individual PacWest Championship, finishing top-three at regionals and appearring at the Division II Championships -- with her the rest of her three promising seasons at CBU.
"I told her after the event that she should get a special award for character and courage," Hackney added. "It is just a shame that the field did not get to see her talent displayed in its full glory because she truly had an outstanding freshman season and was a great ambassador for California Baptist University. She has such a bright future."
