Taking Care Of Business

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University kept the good times rolling Saturday afternoon and took care of business with a 2-1 victory over Chico State.
It puts the Lancers off on a three-game winning streak to start the season, sitting 3-0-0 overall. The Wildcats drop to 1-2-1 with the loss.
Chico State put the pressure on the Lancer defense early, but Noah Oyler came up big for CBU to keep the visitors out of the net. The junior goalkeeper finished the game with six saves to pick up his third win of the year.
The game shifted in the 34th minute as Sebastian Wiesboeck took advantage of a bad clearance from the Chico State defense. Wiesboeck collected the ball and laid it off for Matthew Bernard on the right side of the 18-yard box. The Wildcat goalkeeper tried to cut off the angle, but Bernard tucked away his first collegiate goal on his first touch to put CBU in front 1-0 before halftime.
CBU looked hungry for more coming out of the break and opened the second half with three quick shots on goal before tacking on some insurance.
Luca Tschaidse kicked off the shooting spree by trying to catch the Wildcat keeper off his line, but Damion Lewis just got a finger on the shot to tip it over the crossbar.
Three minutes later, Tschaidse put Aidan Apodaca in behind the Chico State backline. Apodaca got his touch past Lewis, but a Wildcat defender came sprinting in to block the shot.
It conceded a corner kick, however, and CBU capitalized. Tschaidse sent in a lofted cross toward the back post, drawing the keeper out. He missed grabbing the cross, leaving his net wide open for Baptiste Marec to head it home, notching his first collegiate goal.
Chico State managed to break the scoreless barrier in the 69th minute, drawing a penalty kick and putting it away, but CBU held on for the 2-1 win.
The Lancers head to Billings, Mont., next week for the last two nonconference matchups before PacWest action begins. CBU first takes on Montana State-Billings on Sept. 15 and then faces University of Mary two days later on Sept. 17.
