Lancers Threaten #12 Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Up against one of the premiere teams in the entire NCAA Division II West Region, California Baptist University came out strong and won the first set against 12th-ranked Alaska-Anchorage.
Unfortunately, the Seawolves were ranked so highly for a reason and bounced back to grab a four-set win over the No. 25 Lancers (23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15). CBU ends the Division II West Region Volleyball Showcase hosted at Sonoma State and heads into PacWest Conference play with a 5-3 record, while UAA improves to 9-1.
The Lancers open their home season and conference competition Saturday against Fresno Pacific at 5 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym.
Lauren Hackett came away with another double-double Saturday, with 17 kills and 12 digs coming along with three blocks. Jenna Perry had 11 kills, three blocks, four digs and two aces. Tori Ortman finished with a team-high 16 digs, and Kristin McCord joined her in double figures with 10.
It was a tight first set, but CBU created a significant amount of distance with a 5-2 run, sparked by a Lauren Marr kill and solo block, that gave it a 17-13 lead and forced a UAA timeout.
The Seawolves fought back within a point, 17-16, but the Lancers sided out on a Perry kill. It led into a 6-1 run that put CBU on the verge of set point, 23-17. Harris added to the rally with two blocks and a kill and Perry continued her strong play with two kills and a block.
When Alaska-Anchorage threatened overtime, Perry came up in the clutch with another big kill to give the Lancers the 25-23 win.
UAA came out and took control early in set two. CBU battled back late, with a 6-2 run coming on three kills from Hackett and two from Perry. The Seawolves already had set point by then and took it on a 25-20 score.
Alaska-Anchorage did not let up down the stretch and grabbed the last two sets on identical scores of 25-15.
