COMPLETE RESULTS
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Two new faces led California Baptist University to victory at the Lancer Invitational Friday evening, despite the Lancers not running everyone. It gives CBU depth as it begins its quest for its fourth PacWest championship and second-straight NCAA Division II berth.
"Today was pretty exciting," said Coach Ben Gall. "We were trying something new, not running everyone. We didn't sit out our top runners or run only them, we kind of split it. It was fun to see us beat Cal State San Bernardino by so much with the team we ran today."
The fourth-ranked team in the West Region won its first home meet of the season, finishing the 4K with 35 team points. Azusa Pacific took second with 55 points, while Fresno Pacific grabbed third (67) and No. 8 regional team, CSUSB, took fourth with 68 points.
"All three of the teams that finished behind us were full strength, which is very promising for us," said Gall.
Leanda du Bruyn led the Lancers with a time of 14 minutes and 19 seconds. The Cape Town, South Africa, native got off to a good start and stayed at the front of the pack for a majority of the race. Du Bruyn distanced herself from the competition heading into the final turn of the race and coasted to victory.
Kate Robinson wasn't far off her fellow Lancer, clocking in at 14:41. The duo beat out the defending PacWest women's champion, Azusa Pacific's Eileen Stressling, to give CBU confidence in defending its back-to-back conference titles.
"It's cool to see [Leanda and Kate] competing with, and beating, such quality women," said Gall. "Happy to see Leanda get the win in her first race for CBU. There were a couple All-Americans from last year right behind her, so that's very promising. Good race for Kate, too, so that's exciting for us."
Three Lancers came sprinting in one after another for spots nine through 11, giving CBU valuable team points. Charlie Davidson took ninth overall with a time of 15:01, followed by Claire Rainey in 10th at 15:10 and Kim Rabenstein in 11th at 15:16.
"Charlie, Kim and Claire had some solid races, we still have some work to do, but they're better than they were last year," said Gall.
The Lancers look to keep pace next week as they head to future PacWest member Biola, racing off at 8:00 a.m. in La Mirada, Calif.
