OAKLAND, Calif. – There is never an opportunity to let up in the PacWest season, and California Baptist University kept cruising with its second-straight sweep in conference play Wednesday night at Holy Names, 25-18, 25-20, 25-15.
Lauren Hackett put together a double-double with 21 kills and 10 digs, while Tori Ortman posted a match-high 12 digs. Sydney Kralj orchestrated the offense, which hit .333 percent overall (44 kills and 13 errors on 93 attempts), with 40 assists.
The Lancers improve to 7-3, 2-0 in conference heading into two more matches this weekend. They face Notre Dame de Namur Friday at 7 p.m. and conclude at Dominican Saturday at 4 p.m. The Hawks slip to 1-10, 0-3 to start conference.
Hackett hit .485 (21-5-33), while Jenna Perry added 10 kills on a .318 percentage. Lauren Marr followed with seven kills, and five more came in the middle from Abbie Gortsema (.400 percentage, two blocks). True freshman Elizabeth Gilley led at the service line, with three aces in all.
Hitting .700 percent, the Lancers were close to flawless offensively in set one, with just one error on 20 attempts. CBU led 13-10 in the opener, but began to really distance itself with an 8-2 run – fueled by three Hackett kills – that made it 21-12.
In set two, the Lancers notched eight-straight points to turn a 12-11 edge into a 20-11 cushion. Gilley's tough serves sparked the run, as she notched all three of her aces in that span.
A 6-1 run started on two Hackett spikes and an ace to start the third set proved to be all the distance CBU would need to close things out. Hackett powered the Lancers to a 4-0 match-clinching run, with three of those points coming on her kills.
