RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- With the NCAA Division II Championships looming, California Baptist University looked to bolster its number for the national meet in the Lancer Last Ditch Invite on Saturday.
Ten Lancers spread out over the men's and women's teams competed in the event at the Lancer Aquatics Center. CBU received several strong performances on the day in the final regular-season event before the D-II Championships on March 7-11 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Reese Gonzales and Brandon Schuster provided the performance of the day when both posted identical lifetime bests in the 100-yard breaststroke of 57.77 seconds.
"Those are amazing times for them both," Coach Rick Rowland said. "Brandon has just been a great pick-up for us in the middle of the season. We are really excited to see what he can do over his career."
"I've never really had a team before, so coming into this and having all these workout partners become friends has been amazing," Schuster said. "I just had a really good race today, I think because I had fun with it."
Schuster is one of the few Lancer swimmers who has definitively stamped his ticket to the Division II Championships after notching an automatic time in the 400 medley relay.
Tanner Shore tuned up for nationals by swimming the 200 free in a time of 1:42.45. Alexis Ohmar, Scott Tolman, Adrian Gutierrez and Bernardo Valentim swam the 400-medley relay and clocked a time of 3:26.15. Robert Jordan also swam the 100 fly in 55.27.
Fresh off their run to help the Lancer women win a fourth-straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship, Alex Wolf and Kylie Mihld both swam the 100 free and logged times of 52.58 and 57.36, respectively. Wolf came close to hitting the D-II consideration time in the 100 free (52.12).
"That was a pretty good time for Alex," Rowland said. "It's really hard to come off a conference meet and put up times like that."
