RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Per annual tradition, California Baptist University hosted a unique dual-meet event in non-conference action with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday.
If there was any doubt, the Lancers showed they are a formidable team in distance and kicked off the new year with a 150-93 victory over the Athenas to improve to 2-1 in duals. CMS drops to 1-1 on the year. The Lancers get right back to it tomorrow at the Grand Canyon Invite in Phoenix, Ariz.
The swimmer-dive combination of Courtney Chacon and Breanne Schlenger highlighted the meet, each putting on strong performances to help CBU grab the dominant win.
Chacon won both the 300-yard individual medley and 300 butterfly, she touched in three minutes, 24.32 seconds to take the IM and finished the fly in 3:18.50.
"Courtney was the swimmer of the meet for us, she had a great day," Coach Rick Rowland said.
Schlenger set a new Lancer Aquatics Center record on the 1-meter board with a score of 305.85 -- more than 50 points above the national qualifying mark of 255. She also took first on the 3-meter, boasting a 291-point dive set, almost 30 points off the qualifying mark (265).
"Any time a female diver can go over 300 point in a six-dive list, that's incredible," said Dive Coach Jeff Couto. "To see her do that and truly compete the best she's competed since she's been at CBU is exciting as we look forward to the conference and national meets."
Lauren Skinner locked up second on the 3-meter with a qualifying-mark of 268.65, while Savannah Uhlir took fourth with a score of 220.05.
Kylie Mihld helped the Lancers go one-two in the 300 IM with a time of 3:24.92, while Alena Rumiantceva took fifth in 3:32.33. Sara Yoshii also finished right behind Chacon, clocking in at 3:28.07 in the 300 fly.
There were seven other first-place CBU finishes, including Mihld's winning performance in the 300 back (3:19.30).
Two more came from Christie Halverson in the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyles with respective D-II consideration times of 5:04.04 and 10:27.06. Mackenzie Mergel came in right after Halverson in the 500, taking second with a time of 5:10.46. Tessa Olson grabbed third in the longer of the two races, touching in at a time of 11:03.22.
Hannah Evans proved she's more than just a threat in the water polo realm, taking first in the 50 free with a time of 24.70 seconds (not far off the B-cut off 24.05) and second in the 100 free, touching in 54.39 seconds. Hailey Golden grabbed third in the 50 free, clocking in at 25.16 seconds, as well as the 100 free with a time of 54.72 seconds.
