BELMONT, Calif. — No. 1-ranked California Baptist University came out determined to win its final PacWest Championship Saturday morning and did so in dominating fashion.
Not only did the Lancers post their lowest team score ever, with 22 points, they had nine of their 10 runners grab All-PacWest honors and all 10 runners finished in the top-24 of over 100 runners. It marks CBU's fourth-straight and fifth overall PacWest Championship, with the women never finishing outside the top-three.
From the beginning, there was a slew of gold CBU jerseys in the front of the pack. As the race wound on, that factor didn't change as the Lancers accounted for six of the top-10 runners.
Emeline Delanis led the Lancers and won the individual crown with a time of 21 minutes, 11.3 seconds. Anett Somogyi wasn't far behind, crossing the finish line in 21:28.8 for second place.
Kate Robinson and Fruzsi Ladanyi came in one right after another with Robinson posting a time of 21:50.8 for fifth place and Ladanyi clocking in at 21:50.9, sprinting past a Biola girl to take sixth. Delanis, Somogyi, Robinson and Ladanyi all earned All-PacWest first-team honors with their finishes.
CBU's final scorer, Katie Deimling, also grabbed All-PacWest recognition, picking up second-team honors with her eighth-place finish in 21:54.0. While Leanda du Bruyn (10th) and Caroline Barkechir (12th) didn't score for the Lancers, they helped displace runners with their respective times of 21:57.8 and 22:12.9. They joined Deimling on the all-conference second team, along with Berenice Cleyet-Merle, who took 14th in 22:17.4.
Kim Rabenstein rounded out the All-PacWest teams with the final spot on the third team, taking 21st overall. She crossed the finish line in 22:32.8, while newcomer Amelia Czerwinska wasn't far behind in 24th place (22:40.3).
The Lancers beat out their competition by more than 50 points, with Academy of Art (76) taking second, Biola (81) grabbing third and Dixie State (142) picking up fourth off a tiebreaker over Point Loma (142).
It kept CBU's unbeaten streak going as the Lancers head into the NCAA Division II West Regional on Nov. 4 in Monmouth, Ore. While CBU sits atop the regional rankings, the Lancers aren't taking anything for granted, especially with a new qualifying system for the NCAA Division II Championship on Nov. 18. The top-three teams at the regional are guaranteed a berth to the final stage, with eight total at-large bids – from all the regions – being awarded based on points gained during regular season.
