FRESNO, Calif. — After tying history, California Baptist University wanted to rewrite it and the Lancers did just that at Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
Sixth-ranked CBU defeated the Sunbirds in four sets, 25-12, 25-11, 20-25, 25-20, to win its 19th-straight match. It's not only the Lancers best-ever start to a season in program history but their longest winning streak of all time after they previously set the record at 18 in 2010.
Saturday's win also keeps CBU up in the PacWest standings with a 19-0, 11-0 in conference record, while FPU drops to 9-12, 7-5. The Lancers' lead has grown to three matches after Azusa Pacific lost on Saturday to fall to 8-3 and tie Biola for third place in the conference.
Five of CBU's next six matches will come at home in the Van Dyne Gym, starting with Biola on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then Point Loma on Saturday at 7 p.m.
CBU held the Sunbirds to a .074 hitting percentage (44 kills and 31 errors on 175 attempts), with 11 blocks and 77 digs. Yagoda Jedrzejczak enjoyed one of her best matches of the year with nine kills on a .316 percentage (9-3-19) and seven blocks, while Nicci Hinderaker (19), Sydney Kralj (14), Soleil Smith (13) and Lauren Hackett (12) all logged double-digit digs.
Hackett and Kralj both finished with double-doubles with 14 kills and 41 assists, respectively. Sydney Marks hit a team-high .417 (7-2-12) and added four blocks, while McKenna Witt had a match-high 16 kills, four blocks and nine digs.
CBU opened the match on a 17-5 run to immediately set the tone, with Hackett notching four kills and Jedrzejczak and Witt adding three of their own in that span. It allowed the Lancers to sub early and often en route to the 25-12 win.
Fresno Pacific held a 5-4 lead in set two until the Lancers scored 11 of the next 14 points to take a 16-8 lead. Hackett (four kills, two blocks) and Jedrzejczak (two kills, two blocks), along with Elizabeth Gilley's serving, fueled the run as Gilley picked up one of her three aces in the run.
Starting with one of Taylor Brubaker's four kills, the Lancers ended the set on an 8-1 charge, with Witt logging two kills and a block down the stretch.
The Sunbirds got some momentum going with a set three win and 12-9 lead in set four. FPU still led late, 17-16, but Jedrzejczak turned things around when she tallied five-straight points on three kills and two blocks. It sparked a match-clinching 7-2 run, with Witt killing three of CBU's final five points.
