RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final week of the regular season, California Baptist University stayed steady at No. 4 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top-25 poll.
The Lancers are one of just five teams left in the poll without a loss, sitting 14-0-2 overall. CBU has two PacWest games left and can secure its first PacWest title under Coach Coe Michaelson with two wins.
Two wins would also keep the Lancers' chance of hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament high. CBU has been the top-ranked team in the past two NCAA Division II West Region rankings, which would give it hosting rights if that stays come Monday's Selection Show at 3:30 p.m. Pacific.
Statistically, CBU took back the top spot in scoring offense after three big scoring games last week. The Lancers average 3.19 goals per game, edging out the No. 1-ranked team in D-II, Charleston (3.18). Aidan Apodaca leads all of the NCAA (Divisions I, II and III) in scoring with 26 goals so far this year.
The Lancers also rank second in assists per game with 3.06 a match and 49 overall. Hugo Gutierrez ranks 11th overall with nine assists so far this year.
Defensively, CBU boasts the ninth-best goals against average in the division at .598. Individually, Edgar Benitez holds a .618 GAA, which sits 13th in D-II.
CBU's last two regular-season games will be played out on the road, with the Lancers taking on Dominican on Thursday at noon. Saturday marks a big showdown as CBU heads to Notre Dame de Namur for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff. The Argonauts are looking to spoil the Lancers' conference championship dreams, sitting just three points behind CBU in the standings.
