RIVERSIDE, Calif. — For the sixth night in a row, No. 7 California Baptist University brought the energy and grabbed a 73-62 victory over Missouri S&T Friday night.
The Lancers improve to 6-0, while the Miners drop to 1-3.
Bul Kuol led three Lancers in double figures, tying his career high with 17 points (6-for-12). Cory Lange followed with 12 points (4-for-9), while De'jon Davis chipped in 10 points on 3-for-6 shooting in the paint.
Off the glass, the Lancers out-rebounded the Miners 49-to-36. Kalidou Diouf led CBU's rebounding effort with 10 boards, while Davis, Jason Todd and Matt Hubbard each grabbed seven rebounds in the game.
CBU opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers from Kuol and Todd to take a quick 6-0 lead.
S&T tried to stay with the Lancers, but Lange knocked down a triple with just under seven minutes before halftime to give CBU a 10-point cushion. It sparked a 10-0 spurt, where Ty Rowell rattled in a trey, Davis hit two free throws and drove to the basket to give the Lancers a 17-point advantage, 37-20.
With just a second on the clock, Rowell in-bounded the ball to Lange, who threw up a quick three from the corner and found nothing but net to send CBU into halftime with a 43-24 upper hand.
Kuol gave the Lancer their 20-point lead with 12:14 left to play, draining a three after Rowell grabbed an offensive board and passed the ball around to Lange, who found a wide-open Kuol.
S&T chipped away at the margin, pulling within 11 points, 70-59, with just about two minutes left on the clock, but it was the closest CBU would let the visitors get as the Lancers held on for the 73-62 victory.
CBU is back in action Saturday at 7:00 p.m., hosting Saint Martin's, which defeated Academy of Art 77-67 earlier in the day.
