CBU Rallies in Second Half
12/3/2017 12:46:00 AM | Men's Basketball
HONOLULU — After not getting the chance to play Thursday in Hilo, Hawaii, due to unsafe playing conditions, No. 14-ranked California Baptist University faced some adversity in its first PacWest game of the year. The Lancers put together a strong second half, but dropped a 92-79 loss to Chaminade Saturday night.
The Lancers move to 6-2 on the year and open conference 0-1, while the Silverswords improve to 5-3 overall, 1-1 in the PacWest.
Gabe Taylor led the Lancers with 24 points (8-for-15). Cory Lange provided 18 points off the bench, while Kalidou Diouf put together a solid night in the post. The big man finished with 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for a double-double.
CBU found itself trailing 50-32 at halftime, but came out determined to turn things around in the second half.
Taylor came out of the break with a jump shot in the paint to score the first points of the half for CBU, 50-34.
Chaminade managed to put another run together, however, and create a 21-point deficit for the Lancers to climb out of.
CBU dug deep and started chipping away at the lead, scoring on back-to-back possessions off a Taylor layup and Jordan Heading put-back, 57-40. The Silverswords responded with a three, but Lange knocked down consecutive three-pointers to put his team within 13 with just under 14 minutes left to play.
Another Lange triple kept CBU within reach, 63-52, but the Silverswords caught some breaks to keep the visitors at bay.
Still, the Lancers kept battling and once again pulled within 11 off a jumper from Taylor, 82-71, with about two minutes on the clock, but it was the closest they would get.
The Lancers outscored the Silverswords 47-42 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the halftime deficit, dropping the game 92-79.
CBU returns home to host Point Loma on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
While everyone was able to get their first conference games under their belts Thursday, CBU had to wait until Saturday due to Hawaii-Hilo's gym floor being too wet. The Lancers will make up their game with the Vulcans on Feb. 13 at 7:00 p.m., but in Riverside at the CBU Events Center.
