SAN DIEGO — When 40 minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner, California Baptist University out scored Cal State Los Angeles by 10 in overtime to secure the 79-69 victory on Saturday at Point Loma's Thanksgiving Classic.
Tori Mitchell recorded her third double-double of the season, with a career-high 27 points on 11-for-19 shooting, 10 rebounds and a block. Lexy Ram poured in 21 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and a steal. Ram scored a team-high seven in overtime, while Mitchell added six more in the five minutes.
It improved the Lancers to 3-4 this year, while CSULA dropped to 2-6. CBU heads into PacWest play next, starting with a trip to Hawaii where it will play Hawai'i Hilo and Chaminade on Thursday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively.
Blaysen Varnadoe added 13 points (6-for-9), six rebounds and a steal for the Lancers. Emily Schmidt had her handprints all over the game with six points, seven boards, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Both teams were shutout in the first 1:16 of overtime before Mitchell scored in the paint off an assist from Ram. Thirty-two seconds later, after a block from Akayla Hackson, Ram nailed a three-pointer on a Hackson pass to give CBU a 68-63 lead.
Cal State L.A. fought back within a field goal twice, but the Lancers never gave up the advantage. The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to 72-69 with 1:10 to play, but then committed a foul and Ram converted both free throws to make it 74-69 with 48 seconds remaining.
Schmidt came up with a steal on the ensuing possession, which forced CSULA to foul with 33 seconds left in regulation. The Lancers made five of their six free throws down the stretch and stood strong on defense to close out the game on a 7-0 run.
CBU won the defensive battle throughout the entire game, by shooting 48.3 percent from the floor (28-58) and 79.2 percent from the free-throw line (19-24), while holding the Golden Eagles to 32.9 percent from the field (25-76).
