RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Dixie State came into Friday night's match looking to spoil California Baptist University's Senior Night, but the third-ranked Lancers blocked all of those attempts for a 25-18, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of the Trailblazers.
It keeps CBU undefeated at 23-0, 15-0 in the PacWest and drops Dixie State to 9-13, 7-7 in conference. The Lancers can wrap up a share of the PacWest title with a win at Azusa Pacific Saturday at 3 p.m. The Cougars are second place in the conference at 18-4, 11-3 and there are only five PacWest matches left this season.
CBU held the Trailblazers to a negative .024 hitting percentage (31-34-123), thanks to 16 blocks, which tie for 11th most in the Lancers' single-match history and ranks fifth in the NCAA era (2013-17). Yagoda Jedrzejczak led CBU's blocking efforts with 12 of those blocks, which are the third most ever in a CBU match.
"I keep wanting to beat my previous best, and it's really easy when you have Lauren Hackett and Madison Witt setting up just perfect blocks," Jedrzejczak said. "When we're the wall that we are, teams just have to hit right into us and it gives us a lot of momentum and is a lot of fun."
Hackett assisted on a number of those blocks on her senior night, with seven in all, to go along with 10 kills and eight digs. Hackett was one of seven Lancer seniors celebrated, along with setter Sydney Kralj, hitters McKenna and Madison Witt, Kiera Brunson, Soleil Smith and Taylor Brubaker.
Kralj posted 28 assists and 11 digs, while McKenna Witt locked up another double-double with 11 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Madison added seven digs, six kills and four blocks, while Sydney Marks posted four kills, three blocks and two digs at middle blocker.
Dixie State came out hungry and grabbed a 7-3 lead in set one, but an 11-3 run gave the Lancers a 14-10 advantage. McKenna had two kills in the run, while Hackett had a block, kill and ace and Jedrzejczak came in with a kill and block.
The Trailblazers responded to take a 15-14 lead and CBU called timeout to regroup. The Lancers came back to the court on fire and scored seven of the next eight points to grab a 21-16 lead. Madison started the run with three-straight kills before Marks notched consecutive points on a block and kill. A McKenna kill and block and kill back-to-back from Hackett helped CBU finish the set on a 4-1 run, 25-18.
CBU fed off the energy created by those blocks and always seemed to have one saved for a big moment.
"It's like saying to the other girl, you can't hit over us," said Jedrzejczak of the momentum her side gained from all of those blocks. "It's such a big statement that it gets us going. It's a play where we all get to scream at each other. My favorite part is I always look Sydney in the face and we both just scream. It's our thing, we feel the connection and our bond on the court strengthen in those moments."
Once again in set two, Dixie State led early on, 15-12, but the Lancers' block helped change the momentum. Three blocks from Jedrzejczak sparked a 6-1 run that put CBU ahead 18-16. The Lancers then finished off the set on a 6-0 charge, 25-19, on a kill and ace from Madison and kill and block off the hands of Marks.
A 7-0 run flipped things in CBU's favor in set three, giving the home team a 12-9 lead. Hackett scored four points with two kills and blocks each in that span, while Jedrzejczak was in on two blocks, as well. Dixie State kept it a three-point deficit, 18-15, but a kill from Hackett led into three-straight Jedrzejczak stuffs at the net and the ensuing 7-1 run put the Lancers on the path to victory, up 24-16.
"It was a tough match because it was a very emotional night and Dixie State is a very emotional team," Jedrzejczak said. "Our bond kept us going."
