LA MIRADA, Calif. – From one game to the next, it is hard to tell who will lead California Baptist University. The Lancers' balance on offense has been hard for the opposition to contain and that continued with an 82-61 victory at Biola on Monday.
Lexy Ram updated her career best for points in a game for the second time this season, as she scored 27 on 10-for-15 shooting in 27 minutes. Tori Mitchell (5-for-6) and Georgia Dale (4-6) both finished with 10 points for CBU, which also received nine points each from Ane Olaeta and Akayla Hackson.
The Lancers improve to 6-5 and 3-1 in the PacWest as winners of five of their last six, while the Eagles drop to 2-7, 1-4. There is one more game left for them before Christmas break at Cal State East Bay Tuesday at 4 p.m.
CBU also set a season-high for assists with 26, which helped its offense shoot a season-high 54.8 percent (34-62) from the floor and 43.8 from three (14-32). Olaeta and Hackson led in that category with six assists each, while Emma Meriggioli added five.
Neither team could find much separation in the first quarter, with Biola taking a 21-20 point lead after the first 10 minutes. Tied at 23-23 two minutes into the second quarter, Ram caught fire and scored CBU's next eight points with two three-pointers and a layup. The Lancers then closed out the half on a 7-2 run to take a 38-32 lead at the break after another trey from Ram and two layups from Blaysen Varnadoe.
Ram kept CBU in the game, with half of the Lancers' 38 points in the first 20 minutes. The sophomore scored 19 on 7-for-11 shooting, including 5-of-7 from deep in the first 20 minutes. The Lancers topped that by shooting 61.3 percent (19-31) in the second half to run away with the game.
In the third quarter, CBU used a 14-1 charge to take a 65-43 lead with 42 seconds left in the third quarter. Olaeta and Hackson both hit three-pointers in that span, while Dale chipped in two layups.
Consecutive three-pointers from Ram helped the Lancers take their largest lead of the night, 73-45, with 7:55 remaining. Biola was unable to cut the deficit down below 19 the rest of the game.
