Pressuring the Pioneers

HAYWARD, Calif. – Lexy Ram and Ane Olaeta stayed hot, but California Baptist University just fell at Cal State East Bay on Tuesday, 82-78, going into the Christmas break.
Ram scored more than 20 points for the second game in a row, with a game-high 23, while Ane Olaeta put up at least 18 points for the second time in three games and added seven assists.
Nevertheless, the Lancers dropped to 6-6 going into the Christmas break, while the Pioneers improved to 7-5. CBU returns from break for a PacWest game with Dominican on Jan. 3rd at 5 p.m. in Riverside.
A balanced attack highlighted CBU's 12th game of the season on Tuesday, as it continued to shoot for a high percentage from the floor (44.9, 31-69), from three (42.1, 8-19) and the free-throw line (72.7, 8-11).
Blaysen Varnadoe finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Tori Mitchell (six rebounds) and Emily Schmidt both logged eight points for the Lancers, who also received six rebounds, five points, four assists and two steals from Emma Meriggioli.
The first quarter was tightly contested, with Cal State East Bay grabbing the largest lead at 4-0 in the opening 10 minutes. The Lancers scored the final four points of the first quarter, however, to take a 19-18 lead into the second.
CSUEB rallied back with a first-half ending, 14-8 run to take a 38-32 lead at halftime. The Pioneers extended their lead as high as seven, 43-36, early in the third quarter, but CBU charged back to take a 48-47 lead with 12-4 run.
Schmidt started the comeback with two buckets on assists from Olaeta. Varnadoe then added two jumpers before Olaeta capped the run on a layup off a Varnadoe steal.
Cal State East Bay responded to retake the lead and set up a back-and-forth fourth quarter. There were three ties and nine lead changes over the final nine minutes, the Pioneers just managed to hold off the surging Lancers for the win.
