RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team finalized its regular season on a high note as they dominated Southern Utah 77-61 on Senior Day in Riverside.
The Lancers finalize the regular season 21-10 overall and a league-best 15-3 in conference play. CBU claimed its third outright WAC Regular Season title on Thursday evening in a win over Abilene Christian and will now enter the WAC tournament next week with a double bye and the #1 overall seed. The win over SUU also secures a series win over every conference opponent.
CBU's offense was humming from the jump ball, and it was jump-started by the play of senior Chance Bucher, who made her first start since December 15 against UCSD and took full advantage, scoring the Lancers' first seven points and getting the crowd into an early frenzy. CBU would stay hot for the remainder of the period and eventually put up 26 points on 64% shooting, leading by double digits after one quarter.
The Thunderbirds kept pace early in the second quarter as they would trim the deficit under double-digits, but that would be the last time for the afternoon that would happen, as the Lancer offense showed no signs of slowing down. CBU would end the half on a 10-2 run, capped off by a nifty Grace Schmidt layup, as they would lead 44-31 heading into the locker room.
The offensive onslaught spilled into the second half, as the Lancers led by as many as 17 in the third period despite the Thunderbirds having their best shooting frame of the game. Every Lancer that came off the bench seemed to have the golden touch as CBU would have 11 unique scorers in the game and would finally finalize the 77-61 wire-to-wire win to close the regular season.
Bucher would lead the way in her final game in the Fowler Events Center, scoring 19 points, the most she had scored since opening night in a win over UCR. Bucher connected on four triples and collected three rebounds, scoring more in this game than in any other conference game this season combined. Filipa Barros continued her strong play with her fourth consecutive double-double, scoring 12 points and collecting 12 rebounds while adding three steals. Grace Schmidt would play her last game in Riverside and would score six points and dish out a career-best five assists in 26 minutes.
As a team, the Lancers shot 46% from the floor and would hit 11 three-pointers, outscoring the Thunderbirds by 18 in that category alone. The Lancers played one of their cleanest games of the season, with just nine turnovers, and forced 15. The Lancer bench was also a huge factor in the win, as they outscored SUU 24-4.
NEXT: The Lancers will await the winner of the Utah Valley-Tarleton State quarterfinal matchup as they will sit back on a double bye in the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas next week.
