Five Grapplers Find Success at Tough Tournament

LAS VEGAS — In arguably the toughest wrestling tournament of the year, California Baptist University found success but didn't see any grapplers advance to the next day.
Nolan Kistler was the top performer for the Lancers, despite a stacked lineup against him. He opened the tournament with the No. 1-ranked 174 wrestler in Division I and fell 13-3. The top-ranked Division II grappler rebounded with an 18-5 major decision over Zach Stodder of Nebraska Kearney and followed with a technical fall, shutting out Oregon State's Myles Terry 16-0 in three minutes, 22 seconds.
It put Kistler up against Cornell's Brandon Womack – an All-American and top-10 wrestler in Division I – in the next round. Kistler grabbed the bout 7-6, in what FloWrestling is calling the No. 6 upset of the toughest Division I tournament of the year. The run stopped there, however, as Kistler dropped a close 5-3 decision to Division I Harvard's Josef Johnson to be eliminated from the tournament. Kistler's only losses this year have come against Division I opponents.
Christian Smith also posted multiple wins in the tournament at 165. The fifth-ranked wrestler of NCAA Division II opened with a 12-5 decision over Bucknell's DJ Hollingshead and also grabbed a 16-0 technical fall in 5:21 over North Idaho College's Cody Warner.
Three other grapplers also grabbed wins in the prestigious tournament, including Adam Velasquez, Andrew Schulte, Garrett Strang and Zach Schrader. Velasquez grabbed a 19-8 major decision over Western Wyoming's Kedric Coonis in the first rounf of the consolidation 133. Schulte posted a 4-3 decision over Michigan State's Javier Gasca – a Big 10 finalist last year and the preseason No. 7 wrestler in NCAA Division I – in the 141 weight class, while Strang beat Hunter Delong from West Virginia 10-4 at 197. Schrader grabbed a 9-5 decision over Ohio State's Kevin Snyder, but dropped a close overtime decision in the next round to be eliminated from the heavyweight tournament.
The Lancers continue tournament action as they head back to Las Vegas for the Desert Duals on Dec. 18. CBU is back home on January 19, 2018, when it hosts San Francisco State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
