CBU Puts It All Together Against Toros

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Continuing its three-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills, eighth-ranked California Baptist University got a balanced-team effort, which resulted in another victory on a 9-4 score at Totman Stadium Saturday afternoon.
CBU's middle of the order did a majority of the damage, with nine of the team's 10 hits coming from the team's No. 3 to 6 hitters. DJ Porter, the sixth batter in the lineup, led the way with a 3-for-4 game that included two runs batted in and two more scored. Ryan Williams, the No. 3 hitter, clean-up man Tommy Bell and No. 5 hitter Bryce Macy each collected two hits.
"It feels great to win two in a row now, we're still trying to stick to what we do and just get better each and every day," Macy said.
CBU now improves to 2-3, while the Toros fall to 2-4 this season. The series finale between the two is set for Monday at 2 p.m. in Carson.
Pitching depth was also on display for the Lancers, who used four pitchers in the game. Justin Montgomery set the tone early for CBU, as he got the start and made it through five innings where he gave up one earned run and struck out five.
Freshman Andrew Bash recorded a save by throwing two scoreless innings in his collegiate debut on the mound. Seth Kaneen did not allow a run over two innings, as well, with just a walk and a hit over that span.
When the Lancers' arms got in trouble, they found a way to get out of it. The Toros struck first with a one-out, solo home run in the opening inning, but it could have been much worse. A single and two walks loaded the bases, with still just one out, but Montgomery battled back and limited the damage to just the one run with consecutive strikeouts.
Offensively, CBU built on the momentum and exploded for five runs in the second inning after a 1-2-3 top of the inning from Montgomery.
Bell, Macy and Porter started the inning with three-straight singles, with Porter's hit ringing in Bell for a run. Bash, who started at third base, was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. John Glenn scored Macy with a fielder's choice grounder to second base.
An error, RBI grounder from Luke Navigato and passed ball added three more runs to up the Lancers' lead to 5-1 going into the third inning.
"Any time you can strike early, I just think that can help out a lot," Porter said. "We are taking it one game at a time. Taking it step-by-step is our mindset heading forward."
CBU went on to score one run in each of the next four innings, which allowed it to put the game away early. Porter scored Macy, who singled aboard, with a double into right field in the third inning. Bell plated Williams, who doubled on, with an RBI single in the fourth, while Glenn brought in his second run with a sacrifice bunt in the fifth. A balk in the sixth inning capped the scoring at 9-4 after the Toros scored twice in the sixth.
The Toros threatened to make it a game by putting their first two runners on in the sixth. Kaneen kept CSUDH at arm's length, getting a soft grounder hit back to him for the first out. The visitors scored two runs after a walk and single, but Kaneen got the next two outs on a popup to first and grounder to third.
