Pitching Leads Lancers to Toros Sweep

CARSON, Calif. – Rain postponed the series finale between California Baptist University and Cal State Dominguez Hills, but the eighth-ranked Lancers did not let the weather spoil their chance at a three-game sweep of the Toros.
An all-around performance from CBU's pitching staff held down CSUDH's offense and gave the Lancers a 7-1 win on Monday, as they improved to 3-3 on the heels of their three-game winning streak. The Toros fall to 2-5 this year. More rain in the forecast has shifted CBU's upcoming series with Northwest Nazarene to a Wednesday 6 p.m. start.
Logan Rinehart earned the first win of his collegiate career, as the true freshman allowed just five base runners (four hits, one walk) and one run over six innings. Travis Booth, Brody Robinson and Morgan Earman each threw one of the final three innings in which the Toros manufactured just one base runner on a walk.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored first in the top of the second inning, but Rinehart escaped any further damage with three double-play groundouts in the first three innings. Alfredo Rodriguez scored in the third inning to tie the game, reaching on an error at third. A bunt single from Tyler Johnson and walk to Zack Norris loaded the bases and Ryan Williams scored Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly to left field.
CBU took a lead without a hit in the fourth inning. Bryce Macy reached on an error to start the frame, stole second, took third on a balk and then scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 Lancer advantage.
It was in the fifth inning that the Lancers pulled away, with a five-run outburst. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to start it, while a bunt single from Johnson mounted the attack. Williams won out on an 0-2 count and singled into the right-center gap to plate Johnson. Tommy Bell doubled in two more runs and then an error scored Bell to increase the cushion to 6-1 by the end of the inning.
Macy led off the eighth with a single into right field and then moved to second on a pinch-hit walk from DJ Porter. Smart base running allowed Macy to score on another pinch hit, this time a fielder's choice grounder from Michael Mora.
Bell led CBU's offense again, with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Johnson was 2-for-5. It upped Bell's batting average to .565 this year (13-for-23), while he has six extra-base hits (three doubles, three homers) for a 1.087 slugging percentage and seven runs batted in through six games this year.
