GOLDEN, Colo. – Nineteen bonus-point victories has California Baptist University's hopes of winning the NCAA Division II Super Region IV Championship team title alive and well through day one of the event Friday at Colorado School of Mines.
Eight wrestlers advanced to day two of the Super Regional for 13th-ranked CBU, which is in second place by just one point, going into Saturday. Sixteenth-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo leads the tournament with 98 points, while No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney is in third (89).
Three Lancers have already stamped their tickets to the NCAA Division II Championships and kept their hopes of winning individual regional championships still intact, as Nolan Kistler, Nick Fiegener and Jacob Waste all won their three matches to advance to their respective championship matches on Saturday.
Daxton Gordon, Peter Cunningham, Greg Gaxiola, Christian Smith and Paul Head all advanced to day two of the regionals and into the consolation semifinals. They each need just one more win to earn a berth to the national tournament by virtue of a top-four finish in their weight class.
Waste, the top-ranked 197 pounder in Division II, started the regionals on fire. He came out and pinned Newman's Dalton Weidl in three minutes, 47 seconds and then posted a 17-2 technical fall over San Francisco State's Johnathon Costa. In the semifinals, Waste teched Morgan Smith of Simon Fraser, 16-1, to cruise into the championship round.
Fiegener and Kistler were just as impressive, with both winning all their matches by bonus points. Fiegener, who ranks second in D-II at 184, logged technical falls of Gage Stallworth of Central Oklahoma (19-0) and Fort Hays State's Rakim Dean (18-1). The sophomore majored Austin Gaun of CMU in the semifinals, 10-2.
Kistler, a 174-pounder, defied the rankings and won all three of his matches with technical falls. It started with New Mexico Highlands' Kenneth Yara (16-0) and Colorado State Pueblo's Kyle Bateman (16-1). He didn't slow down against the sixth-ranked 174 in D-II, Chadron State's Chance Helmick, cruising to a 16-1 win.
There won't be any rematches for the Lancers' finalists in the championship round Saturday. Kistler will take on Western State Colorado's Brandon Supernaw, the 10th-ranked 174, while Kistler himself is No. 12. Fiegener takes on eighth-ranked JaVaughn Perkins of CSUP. Waste's match is the most intriguing, as he will face Fort Hays State's third-ranked 197, Jon Inman.
Gordon started his day with a 6-2 decision over Colorado Mesa's Nick Swanson in the first round of the 149-pound bracket. He came back with a 21-6 technical fall of New Mexico Highlands' Orlando Guerra. In the semifinals, Gordon clashed with the 10th-ranked 149, Keith Surber of Nebraska Kearney. There was little between the two, with an escape and riding time giving Surber the 2-0 win.
Cunningham earned himself a first-round bye at 141 but then had to recover from a 7-5 overtime loss to seventh-ranked Daniel Salazar of CMU. The junior did that with a 10-1 major decision win against Seth Rich of Western State Colorado and then moved onto day two of the regionals with a 4:39 pin over Dylan Udero of Adams State.
Gaxiola (157), Smith (165) and Head (heavyweight) all lost their first-round matches by a decision but rebounded well to keep their seasons alive and score big points for the Lancers.
Gaxiola pinned Adams State's Gavin Davy in 6:04 and then rebounded from an 8-4 deficit with a 5:20 pin of New Mexico Highlands' Reis Humphrey in the second round of the consolation bracket. The freshman continued his impressive debut season with a 13-5 major decision victory against Chadron State's Johnny Porter.
Smith pinned Jacob Kay of Fort Hays State in 2:12 and then majored Newman's Colton Duhr, 15-4. With a ticket to day two on the line, Smith came up with a 4-1 decision over SFSU's Tyson Kuahine.
Head exacted some revenge on Simon Fraser's Sean Molle. The Clan's heavyweight defeated Head in a dual two weeks ago, but Head picked up a 6-3 decision to end Molle's season. The senior kept up his momentum and majored Tuli Laulu of Adams State to reach day two.
In the consolation semifinals, Cunningham has a rematch with CSUP's Jared Mestas. Cunningham majored Mestas at the RMAC Championships three weeks ago, 15-4. The rest of the matches are brand new looks, as Gordon draws Newman's No. 11 Tyler Mies for the first time this year, Gaxiola takes on FHSU's second-ranked Greg Tooley, Smith faces Oklahoma Baptist's Tyler Mann and Head runs into FHSU's No. 8 Christian Lance.
Armand Molina and Mario Barrios both won matches to add to the Lancers' point total. Molina won his first match of FHSU's Wyatt Alvis, 14-11, and Barrios pinned SFU's Oscar Bulaqui (4:04) in the first round of consolations.
