King No-Hits Knights

SAN FRANCISCO – For the first time in the NCAA era, a California Baptist University pitcher threw a no-hitter on Thursday. Staff ace Garett King faced the minimum 27 batters and set another CBU NCAA record by striking out 15 batters in a 3-0 win over Academy of Art.
"There was definitely some adrenaline going for me in that last inning, but I had to doing what got me there and not deviate from that," King said. "This is first no-hitter I've ever had, high school or little league, included. It's really amazing, just one of those moments I won't forget the rest of my life."
Unfortunately in game two Thursday, the Urban Knights came back to get a 3-0 win of their own and split the day's doubleheader. CBU moves to 18-10, 9-5 in conference and AAU is now 11-15, 7-6, with two more games left in the series, starting with a 1 p.m. Friday and ending with a noon Saturday contest.
King used just 92 pitches in CBU's first complete game of the season. His 15 strikeouts was the most a Lancer recorded in a single game since Taylor Siemens punched out 16 against La Sierra on February 15th, 2011. Even so, the junior never found himself in a 3-2 count and only had one 2-2 count in the game.
"It's really what Coach (Gary) Adcock preaches, it was all about going out, attacking hitters and dictating the contact we wanted," King said. "I was throwing a lot of first-pitch strikes and that was my focus, get ahead in the count and really attack the leadoff hitters."
It was the first nine-inning no-hitter and first completed by a single pitcher over any game in modern Lancers' history. Three CBU hurlers (Cory Allen, Kyle Thomas and Josh Vick) combined for the only other no-hitter over that span in a seven-inning game against La Sierra on Feb. 3rd, 2006.
King, a transfer from the University of Nebraska, put the Urban Knights down in order in the first through third, fifth through sixth and eighth through ninth innings.
Academy of Art got two runners on in the game. A hit by pitch to lead off the fourth was erased on a fielder's choice and then the Knight runner was cut down attempting to steal second base. In the seventh, AAU put another on after a strikeout and throwing error, but he was wiped out on an ensuing double-play lineout to shortstop.
"It's hard because every time you look at the scoreboard you see no hits up there, but I didn't really think about it until the last two innings," King said.
CBU got King all the run support he would need in the third inning. A two-out rally -- started on walks to Luke Navigato, Bryce Macy and ended on a single through the left side from Ryan Williams -- put the Lancers ahead 1-0.
It was a similar story in the eighth inning when walks to Williams and John Glenn led to the second CBU run on an Academy of Art error. A leadoff, pinch-hit home run from DJ Porter in the ninth capped the scoring in the 3-0 win.
Freshman Nick Plaia kept up his hot streak, going 2-for-4 in Thursday's opener, while Navigato, Zack Norris (double) and Brian Ruhm (double) also had base hits in the game.
In the final game of the day, Macy batted 2-for-3 to keep his reached-base-streak going in all 28 games this season. Ruhm added another double in the loss, while the Urban Knights struck for all three runs in the second inning on a walk, double, triple and single.
The Lancers best chance at getting on the scoreboard in the game came in the sixth inning when Navigato drew a leadoff walk. A one-out single from Macy put Navigato on second base, but a double-play grounder ended the threat.
CBU did not give up and Ruhm doubled down the left-field line, with one out, in the top of the seventh to keep comeback hopes alive. The Lancers could not breakthrough, however, and saw the game end on a grounder to first and fly ball to right field.
