Big Time Performances in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Setting new records seems to be trending with California Baptist University this year. After Emeline Delanis set new 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter records earlier this season, fellow Frenchwoman Berenice Cleyet-Merle got in on the action Friday at the San Diego State Invitational.
The junior broke her own record in the 800-meter race, crossing the finish line in two minutes, 7.73 seconds – almost a full second off her previous best time. Not only was Cleyet-Merle's time good for first place, it also was just .23 seconds off an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II Championship in May.
Delanis led the way in the 1500m invite race, finishing 13th in a personal-best time of 4:33.18 – the best time of Division II athletes at the meet and a provisional NCAA Division II qualifying mark. Katie Deimling followed in 4:37.04, also a personal record and just three seconds off a provisional mark, to take 20th. Claire Rainey took second in the 1500m open race, finishing in 4:40.28. Tori Dutchover wasn't far behind her, clocking in at 4:45.27 for seventh. Both times were good for personal bests for Rainey and Dutchover.
Caroline Barkechir caught the personal best bug with a time of 10:05.75 in the 3K, shaving 1.5 seconds off her previous best time. Kate Robinson also took time off her personal record, clocking in a full eight seconds faster than her previous best time. She took 11th overall with a time of 10:09.28.
With how strong the Lancers have started this year, it's no surprise they broke into the first national poll as the No. 6 team in Division II earlier this week, computed based on how strong team performances are compared to the rest of the division.
CBU will look to keep momentum rolling next week as it heads north to the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
