WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the second time in three years, California Baptist University took fourth at the NCAA Division II Super Region IV Championships on Wednesday. The ninth-ranked Lancers ended up one stroke shy of a top-three finish and berth to the Division II Championships.
CBU shot 305 in Wednesday's third and final round at the Wichita Falls Country Club to finish with a 913 (309-299-305) overall in the tournament. Three Texas schools enjoyed the home-course advantage and secured top-three spots and berths to the national round to end a historic season for CBU.
"This is the best year in program history and I am extremely proud of this team and all their accomplishments," Coach Marc Machado said. "They are not only great golfers, but great human beings."
Twenty-fourth ranked West Texas A&M and No. 2 Dallas Baptist battled it out for the region championship, with West Texas A&M hanging on for the win with an 897 and DBU taking second (899). Twelfth-ranked St. Mary's wound up in third place, with a giant push up the leaderboard with a tournament-low, four-over-par 292 on Wednesday giving it a 912 total.
The Lancers won a program-record seven events as an NCAA program this season, including its third-straight PacWest Championship. The Lancers achieved a top-10 rankings in Division II and never finished outside the top four of any tournament this year.
"It was a tremendous privilege to coach these ladies this year," added Machado. "All of them made my transition from assistant to head coach incredibly easy. I will always remember the 2016-17 CBU women's golf team as one of the all-time bests in program history."
All four of CBU's scorers shot 77 or better on Wednesday, with the top three of Marvi Monsalve, Samantha Martirez and Natalie Park each carding 76s. Erica Wang provided the 77 to complete the scoring.
Monsalve birdied twice her round and played the final four holes even par after a birdie at 15. It gave her a 227 total (78-73-76) and secured a 14th-place finish individually in the 66-player tournament.
Martirez and Wang both tied for 19th place. Martirez pieced together her 228 (78-74-76) with a 76, which included a birdie on the second hole and one-under run through the front nine. Wang's 228 (75-76-77) came with a 77 in the final round.

"The three seniors: Marvi, Laura and Natalie have truly laid the foundation for the golf program and its very bright future," Machado said. "I am forever grateful to them."
