CHICO, Calif. — No. 19-ranked California Baptist University opened the NCAA Division II West Regional with a 1-0 loss to No. 12 Humboldt State, but the Lancers aren't done yet.
CBU drops to 36-12 on the year and will face host Chico State – which lost 5-2 to Cal State San Bernardino in Thursday's second game – Friday at 1:30 p.m. HSU improves to 39-13 on the year and will face Cal State San Bernardino in Friday's opener.
Ciara Stapp threw six innings, holding the Lumberjacks to just one run and struck out three batters.
Caitlyn Lloyd and Brittany Galvez each grabbed hits in the game, but the Lancers just couldn't send them home.
HSU struck in the bottom of the first, but Lloyd looked like she might get her team going in the fourth. The newly minted PacWest Player and Freshman of the Year led the frame off with a double to left center and was joined on base by Soraya Shahbazian, who drew ball four.
London Miller sacrificed a bunt to advance both runners, but the Jacks managed to get the next two outs to get out of the inning unscathed.
In the top of the seventh, CBU put on its rally caps and Galvez singled with one out to try to start a rally. A fielder's choice moved Galvez into scoring position at second, but with two outs on the board. The Lancers couldn't send her home, resulting in the 1-0 loss.
The double-elimination tournament continues Friday with HSU and the Coyotes squaring off at 11 a.m. If the Lancers win the 1:30 p.m. contest, they will turn right around to play the loser of the first game.
