DAVIS, Calif. – California Baptist University ended a week where it faced three top-nine ranked teams against USC, the No. 2 team in the NCAA, Saturday morning.
The 15th-ranked Lancers battled and kept things close before falling to the Trojans 16-3 at UC Davis' Aggie Roundup. CBU drops to 6-4 on the season but is undefeated against unranked teams and also owns a win over 14th-ranked Bucknell already this season. USC improves to 6-0 on the year.
Tanner Shore and Jonny Lotero scored in the game, with Lotero getting two goals in the contest. Matt Miller got the start in the cage and blocked nine shots in just 16 minutes, while Gave Thorne made six saves in a half of play.
CBU came out strong in the game and forced a 1-1 tie two minutes, 37 seconds into the game on Shore's goal. USC scored the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Lotero made it a 3-2 deficit less than a minute into the second half.
The Trojans pulled away with a 4-0 run before Lotero got his and CBU's final goal with 4:24 left in the third quarter. CBU makes its home opener with two games on Wednesday, with Concordia (Calif.) and UC Irvine at noon and 7 p.m., respectively. The Eagles are receiving votes in the NCAA top-20 poll, while the Anteaters are No. 10.
